Roxboro Turns Trash Into Cash

An LSS project at LP Roxboro geared to reduce waste sent to the landfill discovered there's a way to make cash from some of their trash.

The team is concentrating on what's considered "household" waste" – paper, metal, cardboard and the like. Plant Manager Wayne Young suggested the team look at a program with Acme Packaging that pays for waste polyester strapping, Roxboro Black Belt Ed Strimple said.

Where before, the mill had been paying a company to haul waste strapping to the landfill, now Acme pays 8 cents a pound plus shipping costs for the strapping. "We don't have a lot of money to spend on recycling, but this one seemed like a no-brainer," Ed said.

It's too early to tell exactly how much cash the strapping from Roxboro will bring in. They're working to reduce waste at the same time they've begun to recycle it, so there's no firm estimate. But so far, they've collected 1,000 pounds in two months.

"It's not so much about the savings as it is the right thing to do," Ed said.
