Getting to 1,000,000 Hours Injury-Free No Small Feat

“Reaching 1 million hours injury -free is a major accomplishment for any organization, but for relatively small operations such as LP Golden or LP Chile to do it is remarkable,” said Denise Edwards, senior product manager in charge of awards for the National Safety Council.

“It’s very difficult to get that number of people on the same page to commit to safety,” Edwards said. “The smaller the operation, the greater the challenge. For 200 people to do that is phenomenal.”

How’d they do it? “With an intense focus on the job at hand, teamwork and a commitment to the value of people’s safety,” LP Golden Plant Manager Bryce Piggot said. His mill reached the milestone on June 19, 2006.

For LP Chile, reaching that milestone on March 17, 2007, was “the result of more than six years of effort to make safety a core element of their operations,” LP Chile General Manager Frederick Price said. “The good thing of this, is when you get to a certain mindset, you keep going,” Frederick said. “You get to the point where the culture has changed. We all understand that we can do the job without distracting ourselves.”
